Since the beginning of this academic year, Worthing High School has placed vocabulary at the forefront of its focus for literacy in Key Stage 3; one of the ways we have done this is to engage our students in a literacy improvement tool called ‘Bedrock Learning’. This interactive online platform introduces students to new vocabulary and concepts via a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, helps them to apply these in different contexts, and quizzes them to develop their retention of new words.
Students in Years 7 and 8 are asked to achieve a minimum of 20 points each week as English homework. This has been a huge success; Bedrock has reported to us that there has been a steady improvement in students’ results since our launch in September, and we are positive that this progress will be reflected in their overall comprehension and attainment across all of their subjects.
The English Department would particularly like to congratulate the following students:
- Jake Parsons for the highest total number of points scored this term in Year 7 with 852 - this is also the highest score across the school!
- Cheuk Kiu Tse for the highest attainment in Year 7 with an improvement of 137%
- Theodore Valantin for the highest total number of points scored this term in Year 8 with 438
- Harry Westover for the highest attainment in Year 8 with an improvement of 130%
Bedrock also reward just 50 students nationally who consistently achieve 20+ points every week with their own prize draws. We are delighted that Cameron Crawt in Year 7 was selected in the Bedrock Stars prize draw this half term and has won a £10 Amazon voucher!
Congratulations to all of our Year 7s and 8s for their progress so far this year, and thank you to parents and students for engaging so enthusiastically with this new homework tool.
