This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if your child has to remain. This guidance covers provision for remote learning for children who have to remain at home either because of individual isolation, a large group of students are required to isolate or their entire cohort (year group bubble) has to remain at home.
Remote education for self-isolating pupils
Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.
If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described below?
- We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects.
- Learning will be accessed on Microsoft Teams. A copy of lesson resources, PowerPoints and worksheets are posted to the “files” section of each class Team. It may appear that these have not been posted recently, however all work is available and may have been posted several weeks or months ago to ensure all work is accessible.
- Students should identify where they are in the scheme of work, and complete the relevant lesson independently.
- KS3 work in the following subjects is set in the Year Group Team as opposed to the individual classes Team; Drama, Music, PE, Performing Arts and Food.
- If any child is struggling to understand any work they should contact their class teacher, or Miss Schouppe (Remote Learning Mentor) using the Remote Learning Team or her email address (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home
Will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?
- We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, removing the practical element of some subjects including those that require specialist equipment.
Remote teaching and study time each day
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
- Remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils the same amount of time that it would if in school as normal.
- Students will follow their normal timetable and be taught 5 one-hour lessons per day.
Accessing remote education
How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?
All work will be accessed through Microsoft Teams.
- Students are expected to follow their timetable and log on to the relevant Team for the lesson timetabled for that particular period.
- Students should join the Live Meet on Microsoft Teams.
- They should have their camera on but remain silent for their teacher to begin the virtual session.
Their teacher will:
- Take a register
- Introduce the learning objectives
- Explain the activities students are expected to complete, with expected timings
- Show students where they can access the resources and submit their work
- Take questions using the ‘hands up’ function or chat function
- Remain available online to answer questions throughout the lesson via Microsoft Teams

- During the session, students should behave appropriately and follow the code of conduct for virtual learning outlined in the section titled “Engagement”.
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
- We have already issued a survey asking parents / carers to identify if their child has access to suitable technology at home which would allow them to access remote learning. We have a record of all students whose parents / carers have identified that they would need support with technology.
- Worthing High School has a limited stock of laptops which are able to be provided to students for the time that they are isolating.

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
While working remotely, students should:
- Attend a registration period with their form tutor or remote learning mentor at 8:40 am
- Join the Microsoft Teams live meet punctually for each lesson
During live tutorials, all students should:
- Only log into a Microsoft Teams session from a school email address or through their school account.
- Treat remote learning the same as classroom learning.
- Log-in to Microsoft Teams sessions on time – ready for the register to be taken.
- Treat all tutorials the same as classroom learning: the same behaviour will be expected as in school.
- Use appropriate language when talking or writing messages on Microsoft Teams.
- Follow instructions from their teacher to turn on/off their camera or audio.
- Be aware that you might be seen for all or sections of a remote learning lesson and should be properly dressed and in a suitable location.
- Be aware of what is visible in the background and that there is nothing inappropriate that might be seen by other participants in the tutorial/meeting.
- Be aware that photographs of individuals (staff or other students) are personal data, therefore screenshots of other members of the online learning environment cannot be taken.
- Not post anything which may be considered to be inappropriate or offensive.
Pupils must engage positively with the learning environment by:
- Following the lead of the classroom teacher by listening, contributing to activities and purposefully working with peers where directed.
- Listening actively to others’ contributions and for class teacher instruction.
- Not talking over others.
- Being respectful of other’s views.
- Being fully equipped for each session with exercise books, planner, pens and pencils to hand.
What support can we as parents and carers provide at home?
- Ensure attendance of students to registration and all lessons.
- Ensure you have communicated with the school if you require provision of a laptop or other technology.
- Set routines for your child that are conducive to a high quality education.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
Where whole year groups are attending virtual tutorials:
- The tutor and classroom teacher will take a registration mark.
- If your child has not attended a virtual registration or lessons, you will be contacted by the school.
- Non-engagement with work will also result in contact being made by the school.
Where students are self-isolating:
- Our Remote Learning Mentor will oversee student attendance and engagement.
- If your child has not attended a virtual registration you will be contacted by the school.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
If your child has an EHCP:
- their key worker will contact them to explain what support and provision will be available to them.
- Support may be in the form of remote LSA support, differentiated work, virtual interventions and daily contact with the inclusion department.
If your child has special educational needs or a disability, but does not have an EHCP:
- they will have differentiated online tasks.
- they can make contact with their key worker for support.
