Safer Internet Day - 9th Feb. 2021

This year’s Safer Internet Day will take place on Tuesday 9th February 2021.   Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

Given the circumstances, your child is spending more time on a device such as a computer, laptop, tablet or phone to support their home learning.  Until classrooms are fully open, teachers are fully utilising the benefits of virtual learning. However, we must be mindful of this increased online time and vigilant of the online risks to students.  To reduce unnecessary screen time, WHS has already replaced KS3 independent learning with offline enrichment activities and we are also planning future enrichment learning days offline.

To help parents and carers with this challenge, below are three very helpful links on internet safety:

  • www.saferinternet.org.uk – a place for parents, carers and educators who are interested in the safety & well-being of their children whilst they embrace the digital world from a young age.
  • www.onlinesafetyuk.com - UK Safer Internet Centre, where you can find online safety tips, advice and resources to help children and young people stay safe online.
  • www.thinkuknow.co.uk - Thinkuknow is an education programme from NCA-CEOP, a UK organisation which protects children both online and offline.

Also, West Sussex County Council’s Community Safety & Wellbeing Team is supporting the Safer Internet Day 2021 campaign and the Community Safety & Wellbeing Team are hosting FREE webinars for parents & carers.   The webinars will explore some of the key factors to be aware of regarding the online space and exploitation of children & young people. There will be a key focus on the following topics: trust online, fake news, conspiracy theories & radicalisation. To book a FREE place, please use either of the links below:
