Information for September 2020 Year 7 joiners

MESSAGE 8 TO ALL NEW YEAR 7S SENT 22/7/20

Year 7 new starters

We are looking forward to welcoming our new year 7 students in September. Please note the following arrangements for your child for the first 2 days of school in September:

Monday 7th September will be for year 7 only to allow them to familiarise themselves with the school before the other year groups arrive. Your child should enter the school site through the South Farm Road entrance and walk to the Student Services foyer entrance. They will enter the school through this entrance, wash their hands, be registered and enter the Millennium Hall to sit in their tutor groups for a ‘welcome’ assembly with Mr Panayiotou.

We would normally love to have parents say their ‘goodbyes’ in the car park and Millennium Hall area but due to Covid-19 restrictions please can we ask that you say your ‘goodbyes’ off the school site as we would like only students on site for that day. This also applies to the end of the day when we would like parents to wait off-site to collect your child in order to maintain the year bubble as students leave school. Please park considerately in the area.

If your child intends on cycling to school, they will be able to enter through the St Lawrence Avenue entrance and then leave their bike in the compound before entering school via the A corridor from the North Playground.

Students will not need PE kit on Monday 7th September or Tuesday 8th September and should be attending in full school uniform (please note our uniform policy on the school website). Students may bring a packed lunch and/or purchase food on both of those days.

From Wednesday 9th September, all students will follow their timetabled lessons. Please remember that, for the time being your child should arrive at school in their full PE kit on the days they have PE.

Should any Government directives change any of our school policies regarding the return to school, we will be in contact with you.

Reminders:

  •         Uniform Orders

Reminder that the deadline for ordering school uniform from our suppliers SWI is Monday 3 August. More information is available on our website:

https://www.worthinghigh.net/news/?pid=3&nid=1&storyid=225

  •         Autumn Term Welcome Evenings for parents/carers – Monday 7th September

The evening will run between 6pm and 7pm. In order to do this safely, in accordance with Public Health England and Government guidelines, the year group will be split into Communities and have presentations in small groups. We will clarify entry points and rooms for each tutor group early next academic year. In order to adhere to social distancing guidelines we ask that only one parent/carer attends. If guidelines change, we will look to extend our invite to more than one family member.

  •         Stationery Orders

Our Learning Resource Centre sells stationery – more details are available on our website. Orders can be taken for September to make it easier for parents and carers who may still be self-isolating.

MESSAGE 3 -  To all our new Year 6 students and parents issued 22.05.2020

Dear Parent/Carer

I hope you and your family are safe and well. Please find the link to our latest transition video from Mr Townsend- https://youtu.be/_bsHRdPTdsw

Year 6 Transition Competition

We would like to invite your child to take part in our transition competitions to get them thinking of life as a Worthing High School student in September.

  • ‘The history of Worthing High School’ - we would like students to research the history of the school; what images and stories can they find; are there any friends and families who are able to share their memories of the school. We would like students to produce a fact sheet no larger than A3 paper on ‘The History of Worthing High School’
  • ‘What Worthing High School means to me’ - we would like students to share their thoughts and feelings on what it means to be starting at WHS in September. They might choose to do this as a piece of writing, poetry, art or sculpture.

Students should clearly mark their name and their current school on both pieces of work.

This is not compulsory, we just thought it would be nice for our new year 7 to start thinking about their new school. Any entries should be brought on the new intake day when they will be judged and the winners announced on the new intake evening. All entries will receive 5 merits as part of our reward system and winners will have an invitation to a reward breakfast.

Intake Packs for Sept 20

Those of you with children already at the school will know we normally hand deliver (to your child’s current school) our Intake Pack with lots of useful information about joining our school just after the May half term. Due to the current situation we will be posting these to all students who have accepted their place at Worthing High before May half term. Please do keep a look out for the envelope as it contains several forms we will need returning.

School website and twitter

Please do visit our website from time to time. We are posting messages to our new Year 7s on the site and reminders of documents that need to be returned. @worthinghigh which is our Twitter account, is also a useful way to keep in touch with all our news.

PGL transition trip

We are very passionate about students having a positive start to their school life at Worthing High School and the PGL trip to Windmill Hill will provide students with an ideal opportunity to form new friendships as they start school. We understand that during these current times families may be apprehensive regarding this financial outlay for this trip and questions over how social distancing will be adhered to, if still required. We are in regular contact with all parties to provide a safe and enriching experience for your son/daughter as they start with us in Year 7 and of course we are all guided by government guidelines regarding COVID-19. Our insurers have provided us with assurance that should this trip need to be cancelled due to government advice regarding COVID-19 then refunds would be made available to families.

Please may I ask that you pay your deposit to secure a place for your child by Friday 15th May. If you need support with the trip please contact us. Parent/Carers will be issued Wisepay logins (our on line payment system) once you have formally accepted your place at Worthing High School.
