As a Gold Schools Games Mark School, Worthing High School was keen to continue to offer a range of modern and diverse physical activity opportunities to a range of users. However, the poorly conceived layout and dilapidated condition of the school gymnasium building was preventing this.
School research showed that KS3 & 4 students who are physically inactivate can be encouraged to partake in after school dance classes more easily than for example typical sporting activities such as football and netball. Furthermore, we established, through focus groups, that students favour sessions linked to a fitness suite based physical activity, whilst parental research showed that parents and their children were willing to undertake fitness suite and dance activities on a joint basis, unlike typical sporting activities such as football and netball.
Consequently, we needed to refurbish and remodel our gymnasium to form a multifunction Dance Studio and Fitness Suite with the aim of both increasing and diversifying the range of physical activities we could offer and thereby enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of our students, their parents and out of hours community users.
The new facility opened in February 2019.
